What the Electronic Security Industry NEEDS = More Training/Apprentice schools and programs…
What the Electronic Security Industry WANTS = More camera and door install “fail” pics of the work of untrained Installers
If you post install “fail” pics, fine,
They’re funny and sometimes downright creative in their absurdity.
But perhaps consider adding constructive criticism along with them (i.e. how this should have been installed is…)
A “fail” picture without constructive feedback is a missed learning opportunity at best.
At worst, it could be taken as public shaming of the work of fellow integrators (or partners) who have probably never been properly trained because they work in an industry without comprehensive standards, few training schools, and even fewer apprenticeships.
One might argue that these “fail” pics spark the community to comment and provide constructive criticism.
This might be true, and I absolutely value community engagement and fostering conversation.
Still, putting the onus on the community to provide constructive feedback and not the pic-poster enables an environment where mistakes are highlighted primarily for laughs.
Humor is great for engagement, but I think we can do better at striking a balance. Initial constructive feedback doesn’t stifle conversation; it simply guides it in a positive direction, where both entertainment and education are certain.
We can have both, but a slight nudge towards constructive feedback might make a world of difference for techs still learning and others thinking about entering the field.
The shift?
Before posting a fail pic, consider asking, “who is this benefiting?” and “How would I have done this differently.”
The result?
Less “crabs-in-a-bucket” comedy
More “standing-on-shoulders” conversations (hopefully also with comedy).
